Earth Abides
Isherwood Williams went on vacation to a cabin in the woods, a haven from the demands of society. Then he got sick.
Sick for days, often delirious, he awoke to find a stranger peering at him from the cabin door. When Isherwood called to him for help, he ran away terrified.
Once recovered, he noticed the strangeness. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station by his cabin was abandoned; and the body of a man lay by the roadside outside of town.
As he began the long trek home, understanding began to settle in.
